Network Spy

Network Spy is a general purpose diagnostic tool for administrators, programmers and students of network technologies. It can operate in different modes depending on the application. Some of the more typical applications of this tool include:

  1. Packet capture and decode
  2. Network Statistics gathering
  3. Software debugging
  4. Intrusion Detection and activity monitoring
Packet Capture and Decode

In this mode, Network Spy can be used to get a snapshot of data from an ethernet network. It is capable of decoding the most widely used IP protocols such as UCP, TCP and ICMP. It also allows you to save this data for later analysis. The decoded packets are displayed in human readable form.

Network Statistics gathering

In this mode, the amount of data attributed to a certain activity can be captured. For instance, if you want to monitor how much data is transferred between user x and excite.com, you can specify a rule to keep a track of amount of this data. Another example is keeping track of how much FTP data flows on your network.

Software Debugging

People programming network software and web applications will find this tool extremely useful. It can be used to debug application to find errors in code, compute bandwidth utilization and find bottlenecks.

Intrusion Detection and Activity Monitoring

Using the new rules-based filtering mechanism, one can capture packets of interest, avoiding a huge capture of all packets on the network. A rule specifies a pattern to match. For instance, one could specify to capture all ICMP packets where TTL=1. This would be true when someone is performing a traceroute. Network Spy also includes various other tools such as DNS Lookup, Ping, TraceRoute and Whois to aid in everyday tasks.

NSNetworkToolsXP

Do you need to update all of the PCs on your network with the latest drivers or software after hours without having to personally go back to your business to turn on the targeted PCs or initiate the processes? It is now possible to cause certain PC configurations to 'Wake Up' (power on) when they receive a special packet. This "Magic packet" is generated using the IP, Subnet and MAC address of the remote computer. By sending this special packet to a dormant computer a remote computer can be caused to "Wake Up" (Boot itself up). This feature can be disabled in the BIOS or in the Network card settings. The only drawback to this is that one has to know the remote computer's IP, subnet and MAC address. Nightshift's NSNetworkTools will provide you with all the tools in detecting the MAC and the IP address. After the boot process completed you can detect and identify open ports, trace the route to the machine, etc. You will also be able to manipulate a remote machine's print queue, services, processes, shares, event log, etc. Remove a print job from the print queue, pause or change the job priority. See the full detail on who scheduled the print job and from where. See the size and the number of pages to print and pages already printed. Stop, pause, spawn new or change the priority and startup settings of any remote machine's service. See the detail on each of the services. Do the same with processes. See exactly what programs are executed on the remote machine or if you need to have a program executed then just spawn an instance. View and completely manage the remote machine's event log. See all entries and even backup the event log or just clean it up. See an inventory of all hardware and even get information on the installed service packs for the operating system.

Omniquad Personal Firewall

Omniquad Personal Firewall is a personal security system to protect your computers from unauthorised access over the LAN and / Internet. Personal Firewall is a software application used to protect a single Internet-connected computer from intruders. Personal firewall protection is especially useful for users with "always-on" connections such as DSL or Cable modem. Such connections use a static IP address that makes them especially vulnerable to potential hackers . Often compared to anti-virus applications , personal firewalls work in the background at the device (link layer) level to protect the integrity of the system from malicious computer code by controlling Internet connections to and from a user's computer, filtering inbound and outbound traffic, and alerting the user to attempted intrusions. Some of the features of Firewall are as follows: a. 4-level packet filter firewall protection for the local network / dial up/ ASDL and cable modem connections b. Global lock immediately shuts down all net access c. Define & enforce trusted zones d. Alerts for denied network connection attempts e. Real-time network activity indicators f. 3-level program control intercepting connection attempts by any program on your computer g. Automatic lock shuts down internet access after specified period of inactivity

FileTiger

FileTiger is a high-power dual-window file synchronizer and backup tool. Most file backups consist of two operations: 1) Looking at files, including examining their contents, changing storage details like file names and dates, and exploring directory trees. 2) Moving the files between two folders or directories, including copying, copying only newer or missing files, and creating archives (backups and ZIP files). FileTiger is designed to do these things easily. All the buttons on the FileTiger screen are mirrored left-to-right, so you can always see where your files are, and where you're going to put them. New in version 1.3: New wild card renaming for digital photos makes it easy to add event descriptions to sets of numbered pictures. Folder paths can now be copied to the clipboard, to make entering locations easier in programs that won't browse to a file. The number of files that can be opened or edited at once can be limited, and is user-controllable. Full HTML help has been added. New in version 1.2: Copies filenames to the clipboard, with or wilthout their full paths. Read file to clipboard-- can now handle many bitmap graphics formats, in addition to text files. Edit as text--can now send up to 10 files for editing simultaneously. Add Masks-- (Shortcut: F9) now remembers up to ten masks from previous sessions. Added support for CDRW disks with packet software, such as Direct-CD. Tree Copy now displays skipped filenames during a backup. The file masks list now changes color to blue if any mask other than *.* is used. Why a Tiger? It takes a FileTiger to organize a pack rat... FileTiger is from Science Translations Software, selling software worldwide since 1991.

Socket Workbench

Socket Workbench is the definitive tool for analysing socket communications that underlie the Internet and several types of inter-process communication. Configure Socket Workbench to be a socket client (like a web browser or e-mail client) or a socket server with ease. You can send data through a socket and analyse that data that has been received. Also, Socket Workbench has the unique "Pass Through Mode" which allows the interception of socket communications between a client and its server without packet sniffing. Features include: - Allows the analysis of the E-mail, HTTP, Time Of Day, FTP and any other socket based communication protocol including real-time and client-server applications. - Configure Socket Workbench to be a socket client or a socket server. - Allows any number of clients to connect while in Server mode. - Intercept and analyse socket communications using the Pass-Through mode. - Includes a library of the well-known socket port numbers and servers. - Author and send e-mails using the e-mail protocol template. - Contains a library of HTTP requests from the popular Web Browsers and the HTTP Responses from Web Servers. - Ideal for testing and monitoring real-time applications or two/three/n-tier client-server applications. - All socket state transitions and Socket Workbench events can be logged. - Data can be analysed using a raw, binary, octal, decimal or hexadecimal format. - Incoming and outgoing data can be logged with an optional time stamp. - Contains 7 pre-defined configurations to get under way as soon as possible. - Incoming data can be filtered. - Schedule data to be sent at regular intervals. - Data can be split in to messages and messages can be split into fields. - Allows the stress testing of socket client and servers. - Data sent through the socket can be "linked" to a file. When the contents of the file changes, the data is automatically re-read and transmitted.

TCP Spy

When TCP Spy's Start button is pressed, it will capture and display all socket calls of the next application that starts and makes a socket call. It will also capture and display the data that is sent and received on the application's sockets. The application can be of any type. TCP Spy displays its output in a scrollable text box. This data may additionally be sent to a file as text or HTML. By default, only 32KB of data is kept in the scrollable text box. Higher data limits may be selected, including unlimited. Based upon each socket's first transferred message, TCP Spy will determine if the protocol being communicated over the socket is text based. If so, TCP Spy will test each following message for text. If a message contains only text, TCP Spy will display it as such. Else, TCP Spy will show the message in hexadecimal and ASCII. If the protocol is HTTP, the HTTP headers will be displayed as text. The unregistered version does not provide the option of sending data to a file, and only keeps 32KB of data in the scrollable text box. When you register TCP Spy, you will be sent a code that enables the additional features.

TCP Viewer

TCP Viewer captures and displays all data that is transferred between client processes and a server process communicating through TCP/IP. The processes can be running on the same machine or different machines located anywhere on a network or the Internet. TCP Viewer can run on a machine different than the machine(s) that the processes are running on. An example of a client and server is a web browser and web server. TCP Viewer can be used by a developer to debug protocol problems or by anyone who is curious about what data is passed between processes.
