Have a video card with OpenGL hardware support? Show it off with the ElectriCalm 3D Screen Saver. When it kicks in, your point-of-view is as if you were spinning around in a parched desert landscape, complete with red fog and a starry sky. Multicolored lightning bolts strike all around you, while you hear realistic sound effects. Animated crossline and hieroglyphs add to the mysterious, other-worldly feel. The program will work if you just have the software-based OpenGL support that comes with most 32-bit versions of Windows, but the graphics were indeed impressive on 3dfx Voodoo 3000-powered display, especially when the high quality rendering setting was selected. Other options let you specify the video mode and toggle the sounds, crosslines, and hieroglyphs.

What better description than the one from our readers: You're walking through a desert in a land where half the natives are cannibals and the other half are vegetarians. Also half of each group always tells the truth and the other half always tells lies. To make matters worse each will only make one statement to strangers. You come across two natives and the first says something in his native tongue, The second looks at you and says He said he will lead you to safety, you can trust him, but don't believe him, he's a big liar. I'll take you to safety. Which native do you follow? I love problems like this. I mull them over in my head and stick with them until I get the right answer. It is for this reason that I snapped up a copy of Paradox from E-dition. The editor promises that math can be fun. I am happy to report that the book did not disappoint. The puzzles were mostly new to me, though I've seen a few before in some variation or another. What was especially exciting was the interface. The book is in an exe format and provides the reader with interactive hints, chastisements and answers. This added to the fun of solving the puzzles greatly. The Editor does warn that the interface is a little particular about how answers need to be phrased. Sadly this warning is warranted. Since many of the puzzles have alternate answers, you can be chastised after giving the correct answer, just not the computer's answer. I quickly overcame this limitation and decided I didn't need to be praised when I came with an answer that I knew was correct. In fact, I've gone through the puzzles again and again looking for ways to fool the book. If you like these type of puzzles you'll love this book. I do want to say a little about the interface of the book. Unlike most e-books that come in html or similar formats, E-dition releases its books in exe files. The look and feel of the book is like nothing I've ever experienced before. The pages are textured and the interface is seamless.

Leylines is an intriguing turn-based strategy game of exploration and conquest.
Set in a fantasy world, it lets you pit your armies, magic and commerce against up to seven opponents and a hoard of barbarians. Start from a single city and work your way up to a grand empire. Train over fifty different units and cast over fifty different spells to gain the upper hand.
The source of your power lies in your cities, where your gold and units are produced. You can handle the micromanagement yourself, or leave it to the automated queuing system. A hands-on tutorial is available to get you started on city production and other things.
Build marketplaces to increase your cash flow, or magic portals to connect cities. Use spells to increase productivity. Keep the people happy by organising festivals, or crush them under heavy taxes. And build mighty Monoliths to be remembered by for generations to come.
Control fifty-five different units, from the lowly scout to the mighty bladesinger and from the stealthy druid to the awesome dragon. Find out which unit should be used to fight which enemy.
Units serve to explore the world and defeat enemy units on the battlefield. However many units have special powers such as building farms, teleportation or controlling enemies.
Over time, unit gain experience and become stronger. Also units can be enhanced by a variety of spells, such as Flame Aura, Storm Run and Imperviousness.
World maps range from tiny (24x24) to huge (64x64) and consist of twenty-five distinct terrain types.
Instead of playing a fixed scenario, you can use the random world generator. Specify size, climate and terrain diversity and you'll never lack for a new place to explore.
Of course every world comes with its hazards. Icebergs can sink your ships; your troops can scorch to death in the desert or catch disease in a swamp; and during winter the lakes freeze over and hills become impassable. Use hostile terrain to form natural barriers from your foes.
